Our Story:
Part 1:
A Journey of Empowerment
The Ethiopian Girls’ Bright Future Fund (EthioGBFF) is more than just an initiative; it is a beacon of hope born out of a shared vision and a deep-seated desire to make a difference in the lives of young women from one of the most underserved regions in Ethiopia. This shared vision, driven by compassion and the belief in the transformative power of education, came to life. Despite the odds stacked against them, these young women have shown remarkable resilience and determination, inspiring us all.
The Seed of Inspiration
The EthioGBFF organization traces
its origins back to a profound realization by Mr. Amare Berhie and his wife,
Weyni Tekleab, a successful Ethiopian-American residing in the USA. Restless
about how they could contribute to their homeland, they became aware of the
significant educational disparities young women face in remote areas,
particularly in the Wag Himra Zone. The lack of resources, the devastation
caused by perpetual conflicts, and the overwhelming socio-economic challenges
made it extremely difficult for these bright young minds to envision a future
beyond their immediate circumstances.
A Call to Action
Moved by the plight of these young
women and recognizing the potential within them, Mr. Berhie and his family
decided to take action. They understood that education is not just a pathway
out of poverty but a fundamental human right that can unlock countless
opportunities, transforming lives and communities. With a strong belief that
investing in girls' education could catalyze positive change, they envisioned a
foundation that would provide the necessary support to help these young women
overcome barriers and pursue higher education, thereby transforming their lives
and communities. This unwavering belief in the transformative power of
education fuels our hope and determination.
The Foundation’s Birth
To realize this vision, Mr. Berhie contacted
Dr. Melsew Tefera, a dedicated educator and advocate for educational equity in
Ethiopia. With the invaluable support of people like you, they laid the
groundwork for the Ethiopian Girls’ Bright Future Fund. With Mr. Berhie’s
financial backing and Dr. Tefera’s on-the-ground expertise, they set out to
create a comprehensive scholarship program to support female students from
impoverished backgrounds in the Wag Himra Zone. The foundation was born and
continues to thrive through the collective effort of individuals like you.
Building the EthioGBFF
From the outset, EthioGBFF was
built on empowerment, equality, and community principles. The founders were
determined to ensure that every young woman receiving support would have the
resources, mentorship, and encouragement needed to succeed. They established
clear objectives:
1.
Financial
Assistance:
Covering educational materials, transportation, and other essential expenses to
reduce financial barriers.
2.
Mentorship
and Guidance:
Providing academic support and personal development guidance through a network
of dedicated mentors.
3.
Continuous
Monitoring and Evaluation:
Regularly assessing the program's progress and impact to ensure its
effectiveness.
Overcoming Challenges
The journey was not without its
challenges. The logistical difficulties of reaching remote areas, the
bureaucratic hurdles, and the sheer scale of the needs could have been
overwhelming. However, the founder's unwavering commitment and support from
local collaborators like the Wag Himra Zone Women and Children Department and
Save the Children's Sekota head office ensured the program's steady progress.
A Beacon of Hope
Since its inception, EthioGBFF has
provided scholarships to numerous young women, empowering them to pursue their
dreams of higher education. The program's impact is evident in the
beneficiaries' improved academic performance and increased confidence and
aspirations for the future. Each success story is a testament to the
foundation's mission and the potential for education to transform lives.
Looking Ahead
EthioGBFF envisions a future where
every young woman in Ethiopia, regardless of her socio-economic background, can
pursue higher education and achieve her full potential. The foundation remains
committed to expanding its reach, continuously improving its programs, and
fostering a community of empowered young women who can drive positive change in
their communities and beyond.
